Shifting Lenses

Third Culture Kids: “children who move between cultures before they have had the opportunity to fully develop their personal and cultural identity”.

We are two third culture kids documenting what we have observed in the travels we have been so fortunate to experience. Home for us is the USA, but also China for eight years, and now Singapore. Growing up in different countries has shaped the way we view the world. We hope you enjoy reading our reflections on our expat life and travels.

It is scientifically proven that Barbados has some of the purest fresh water in the world. The citizens take great pride in this, and it is even mentioned at hotel check-in. You probably assume I am talking about the beaches, but I am NOT. The ocean is nice, too. However, I am referring to their drinking water.

The tap water in Barbados has been filtered naturally by the island’s coral limestone bedrock, and it is monitored by the Barbados Water Authority to meet World Health Organization (WHO) standards. During my time in Barbados, I learned that there are other countries in the region that also have safe tap water. Though my biased Bajan sources insinuated it isn’t as good.

One of the best things about travel is the random facts you learn along the way. This little fact allowed me to learn about the geology of Barbados. It also led to interesting chats with my family about the different things people take pride in around the world.
