The Dominican Republic is the Caribbean’s most popular destination, drawing over 10 million visitors annually. The “DR” is famous for all-inclusive resorts and white-sand beaches. Apparently, it also has a rich colonial history. But I doubt many of the 10 million leave their vacation having learned about the history or culture of the country they just spent time in.

All-inclusive resorts are easy. They are truly a holiday where no real planning or decisions must be made. Every meal is taken care of. The food options are made to please the everyone. Old or you, health nut or ready to eat it all. No need to pop into a local restaurant or food court. If you want to do a water sport, it is probably available on your attached beach. Some resorts even have an attached casino. Guests have no reason to leave and explore.

I went to the DR and stayed at an all-inclusive. It was fun. I had a great time with my family. However, we probably won’t do another all-inclusive in the near future. It felt like we could be on any island in the Caribbean or even on the mainland in the USA. It is a bit sad that so many of us come to the DR without ever learning about what the DR is really about. Unfortunately, the hardest part of an all inclusive vacation is getting out of your little bubble and experiencing local culture. That takes real planning and work.
